You do not need to install every app that appears in a long China travel guide. Start with the tasks your trip actually requires: paying, getting online, reaching your hotel, moving between cities, and translating essential details.
The goal is not to collect apps. The goal is to make sure the few apps you rely on are installed, opened, logged in, and usable before your flight.
The app categories to think about
Payment
Set up Alipay before departure. Many travelers also install WeChat because it is widely used for communication and can provide another useful payment setup option where available.
Translation
Install a translation app and download any offline language pack it offers. This is especially useful for hotel addresses, food questions, and basic transport conversations.
Bookings
Keep your flight, hotel, and train booking apps available. Save screenshots or PDF copies of important confirmations so you are not dependent on a live connection.
Transport
Your transport setup depends on your cities and route. If you will use taxis, trains, or public transport, decide how you will access those services before arrival.
Maps and internet
Do not assume your usual map and communication apps will work exactly as they do at home. Check the current availability of the services you rely on and prepare an internet plan before departure.
Communication
If you are using WeChat for support, hotel communication, or local contacts, install it before your trip. Make sure you can still access the phone number or email used for login.
Install fewer apps, but set them up properly
Five well-prepared apps are more useful than fifteen apps you have never opened. Before your flight:
- Log in to each essential app.
- Complete required identity checks.
- Save important addresses in Chinese.
- Download offline files where available.
- Confirm that your phone number remains accessible abroad.
Your route changes the answer
A visitor spending four days in Shanghai needs a different setup from a family traveling through Beijing, Xi'an, Chengdu, and Zhangjiajie. Choose apps based on your actual itinerary and the people traveling with you.
A simple way to decide
Ask yourself these questions before downloading more apps:
- How will I pay for the first transport ride after landing?
- How will I show my hotel address in Chinese?
- How will I translate basic questions if I am offline?
- How will I access train, flight, and hotel confirmations?
- How will each traveler in my group get online?
If you cannot answer one of those questions, your app setup is not ready yet.
