First 24 Hours in China: What to Prepare Before Landing

A practical first-day China arrival plan for first-time visitors, covering internet, payment, transport, hotel check-in, food, and rest.

2026-05-30 · 8 min read

Your first 24 hours in China should be simple and realistic. Many travel problems happen because visitors arrive tired and try to solve payment, internet, transport, hotel, and itinerary decisions all at once.

Prepare the first day before you fly. It does not need to be exciting. It needs to work.

Step 1: Get online

Before landing, know how you will connect:

  • Roaming.
  • eSIM.
  • Physical SIM.
  • Airport Wi-Fi as backup.

Do not make your first task after landing a complicated internet decision.

Step 2: Pay for your first needs

Your first payment needs might include transport, water, food, or a small purchase. Prepare:

  • Mobile payment setup.
  • Backup card.
  • Modest cash.
  • Bank support details saved offline.

If one payment method fails, you should know what to try next.

Step 3: Reach your hotel

Save your hotel name, address, and phone number in Chinese and English. Keep a screenshot offline.

Before flying, decide:

  • Taxi, metro, ride-hailing, airport bus, or hotel transfer.
  • What to do if your flight arrives late.
  • What to do if you are traveling with children or older parents.
  • How much luggage you will carry.

Step 4: Check in and rest

Make sure your hotel booking details are accessible offline. Keep travel documents ready. If you arrive late, do not plan a difficult dinner or long walk immediately after check-in.

Rest is part of the plan, especially for families.

Step 5: Keep the first day light

A good first day might include one simple meal and a short walk near the hotel. A bad first day is a tight sightseeing schedule that depends on every app, payment, and transfer working perfectly.

Your personal risk factors

Your first-day plan needs extra care if:

  • You arrive late at night.
  • You travel with kids.
  • You travel with older parents.
  • You have not finished payment setup.
  • You are unsure about internet access.
  • Your hotel is far from the airport or train station.

Still not sure if your first-day plan is safe enough? Submit your arrival city, arrival time, hotel area, and concerns. China Trip Helper can check your plan before you fly.
